RECTOR’S ANNUAL REPORT
In many ways, 2009 has been a year of fundamentals: strengthening our foundations, deepening our roots, and clarifying our sense of self. In May, our mutual ministry review found a sense of renewed stability in our congregation and leadership, and a growing urgency about reaching out and getting out into our neighborhood and communities. We know ourselves to be healthy, caring, prayerful, curious, ready to work hard and to enjoy life (especially if it comes with food!) Now we’re looking for new ways to share that, and to make a larger impact in the world around us.
With that to guide us, the Vestry set priorities in August for the program year (running from September 09 to Summer 10). We chose to retain last year’s priority on lively, spirit-feeding worship, and strong, attractive programs for our youth, and added the priority of increasing our hospitality and welcome to the community outside our doors.
We have tremendous, gifted leadership for our youth programs – Kim Lombardi’s guidance of VBS, a large group of excellent and committed teachers, the direction of Jennifer Ceplecha in our Sunday School, and the caring hospitality extended to children of all ages in our worship. We also benefit from the faith, learning, and leadership of Calvary kids in our Sunday worship. We were blessed to hear Lauren Szady preach in March, and each “Youth Sunday” I learn more about our faith as our children lead our prayers.
That leadership, and our children themselves, provide both vision and action as we continue to strengthen our children’s programming. In the coming year, we will especially need adults committed to beginning the Journey to Adulthood with a new group of 5th and 6th graders.
In 2009, we’ve experimented gently with new music and prayers in our Sunday worship. Thanks to the leadership of Jeri Kellan and our dedicated choir, we’ve found energy and joy and peace in music from new sources beyond the hymnal. We’ve spent time praying in unfamiliar words and sometimes unfamiliar postures. (For the record, you may always choose whether to stand or kneel during the prayers of the people and the prayer of consecration. We’ll encourage one or the other in some seasons, but it’s perfectly holy for some to kneel while others stand, and vice versa.)
We’ll continue to balance the new with the familiar in worship this year, always seeking ways to help us hear God more clearly, and to feed our spirits with the work and words of God’s Spirit. I have also asked Jeri Kellan to help begin a children’s music program later in 2010, which can help strengthen and enliven both our worship and our youth programs.
To strengthen our invitation and welcome to the community, the Vestry engaged in an identity and public relations project this fall. The cover of this report reflects one result of that process.
With the help of a graphic designer introduced to us by Nancy Magurno, we looked for new ways in image and words to make it easy to tell the world who we are, and invite the community to join us. A new logo for Calvary, expressing core values of personal connection and focused faith will now appear on our letterhead and publications. The Vestry identified “Reach out. Receive. Rejoice,” to express the gifts of our life together. Finally, a small group worked to produce a new Calvary welcome brochure, telling our story in a way we hope will be inviting, and easy to communicate. A grant from the Congregations Commission of the Diocese of Chicago paid for this process of refreshing our “brand” – the way others think of us – as a step in developing a strong public presence.
In 2010, we’ll be able to use these new tools to tell the world who we are. The Vestry and program leaders will work to get the word out about exciting things happening at Calvary, and every member of the congregation can pass on a brochure, invite someone to a party or worship service, or invite a community leader to visit with us and see what we can do to work with our neighbors.
One of the remarkable gifts of 2009 has been the generosity and creativity of our congregation. We closed a potential 25% budget shortfall ($60,000) to approximately 3% ($8,000). This is possible thanks to the generosity of each of you, but also reflects the loss of several valued and beloved members of the congregation, and many things carefully left undone in our programs and buildings.
So, as we prepare for 2010, I asked the Vestry to consider how we could focus our financial planning on using our generosity, time and talent on strengthening our ability to make a difference in the world, rather than on meeting the budget and beating a deficit. After much difficult and thoughtful discussion by the Vestry and Finance Committee, the budget you see today will reduce our commitment to administrative costs in favor of increasing our program funding and our ability to meet unexpected challenges.
As I look ahead to 2010, I remember that two of the great gifts of this congregation are teaching and healing. In addition to a joyful and faithful children’s and youth program, 2009 has seen a step up in our adult faith formation. Thanks to Deacon Tom Smith, who organized our summer program, and Grant Iannelli, who has taken on leadership for our “school year” programs, along with many gifted parishioners who have shared their knowledge and interests, we’ve had excellent conversations, challenging questions, and a well-attended 9:15 Sunday program. One of the most popular programs has been a series on “Food and Spirit,” considering our meals, snacks and habits by reading scripture and nutrition labels together. Thanks to Nancy Moran for her nutrition expertise, faith, and humor for guiding those sessions!
In the coming year, I expect us to take that momentum to the surrounding community. I’m asking a group of Calvarians to look for needs – for health and education – that are not being met in the community, and to seek a way for this preaching, teaching, healing community to respond, in the grace of God.
As I reflect on 2009, I give particular thanks to God for the committed, faithful, joyful and patient leadership of John Jaska, Jim Adamson, and every member of the Vestry; Jim Cekal and Dennis LeBlanc, treasurers; and Jeri Kellan, Pat Campbell, Deacon Tom Smith, and Lester and Teresa Adamczyk, the staff of this congregation. Many, many of you have supported their efforts and benefitted from their service, and I am grateful beyond words for the privilege of working with them, and for sharing the blessings of life as Calvary with all of you. the Rev. Emily A. Mellott
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DEACON ASSISTANT
Statistically in 2009, I preached 22 times, was the officiant at 8 communions under special circumstances, assisted as the Deacon 105 times, was the adult formation leader 5 times, was the clergy resource at 45 Bible studies, and assisted at 5 Communion classes including the baking of communion bread.
At the level of the Diocese, I ran unsuccessfully for a new term on Bishop and Trustees and presented a resolution concerning clergy continuing education, which was defeated. On the brighter side, I was a co-presenter of two sessions at the ministry fair and a session at the diocesan convention. Additionally, I served on the diocesan audit committee.
It is clear to me that my role as the Deacon Assistant has changed considerably from when I began at Calvary. While it is appropriate that as the needs of the parish change, so should the role of the Deacon, I am concerned that the parish believes that I am adequately fulfilling their expectations and/or needs. Finally, I want to encourage the parish to take steps to discern and raise up individuals for the deaconate.
Respectfully submitted, (The Rev) Thomas G Smith
2009 SENIOR WARDEN’S ANNUAL REPORT
I should have kept a daily diary over the year. Trying to summarize it is difficult. In retrospect, I think 2009 has been a year of renewal for Calvary Church. A lot of energy and work was expended in 2008 in the search for a new pastor. Once hired, we kind of took a second breath and relaxed a little bit to refresh ourselves.
We have had a full year with Pastor Emily. This year’s work began anew by identifying priorities and working to bring those items to closure. Those efforts included redefining who we are, where we are and how can we grow together. Pastor Emily worked closely with the vestry on these priorities and efforts.
I feel great progress has been made at Calvary over the year. It is not so much what you or I can identify, but it is a feeling of unity and progress being made as a parish in transition.
It has been an honor to be Senior Warden this year. The Vestry members have done a great job of coming together to discuss and handle difficult issues.
And a big thank you to Pastor Emily for her support and input this last year. John Jaska
EPISCOPAL CHURCH MEN 2009 ANNUAL REPORT
The ECM (Episcopal Church Men) is a group of men from Calvary Church who get together on a regular schedule agreed upon by the body.
It is a voluntary association of men. It seeks to make good men better by presenting an environment where the men can meet, discuss issues, and generally have a good time interacting with one another.
The group met monthly on the second Thursday of each month. Meetings began at 6:30 pm with a
a meeting followed by dinner or Pot-Luck. We did not meet during the summer months of July, and August nor November and December. We will continue to meet on Thursday Nights in 2010. This eliminates conflicts with the Tuesday date. First meeting in 2010 will be January 14th, 2010.
We met at Anyway’s Restaurant in Oakbrook Terrace. We did meet at several members’ homes during the year which we will expand to include more in 2010.
We helped with the Fund-raiser for Outreach doing work at the Taste of Lombard in July. We also performed some maintenance around the church during the year.
ECM sponsored The Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper as well as the Annual Golf Outing in August.
We had the 2nd Annual “Man Faire” in September. It is hard to separate old tools from the men but we did have a good selection and a fine day for the sale.
Activities being planned and discussed for 2010 are again the Pancake Dinner, the Golf outing is planned for an August Date and other various fund raising help such as Lilac Day and Taste of Lombard. More ideas and Activities will be coming in 2010. John Jaska
STEWARDSHIP ANNUAL REPORT 2009
We had several great programs this year
and the beginning of a written outline of possible stewardship opportunities.
January 2009 - Basic Budgeting workshop
was held which was attended by both Calvarians and several Lombard community
members
Cash for Calvary Program was redesigned
to be a continual opportunity to increase cash flow. Patti Grobe has done
an outstanding job of managing the program on a timely basis. And
her "advertising" emails have been delightful! Approximate income has been $1228.
The Ministry Fair called Our Cup
Overfloweth Banquet was held in September with enthusiastic participation by
ministry leaders and parishoners.
The Pledge Drive which included the
opportunity to "pledge" time and talents as well as money with the
theme Our Cup Overfloweth, resulted in
- 80 Committment sheets
submitted
- $182,382 pledged for 2010 as
of 1/11/10.
Although this is still about $55,000 short
of our anticipated expenses to continue with our current ministries and staff,
it is nearly $8,000 increase over last year's pledged amount with about the
same number of families participating.
The challenge to Calvary for 2010 is to
look for additional ways to bring income to our church as well as to increase
our invitation to the community to join us.
I am very appreciative of your support
of our church and my growing knowledge of Stewardship in my 3 years as your
Chairperson.
Nancy Magurno
LECTORS & CHALICE BEARERS
Thank you to everyone who so generously gives their time to volunteer every Sunday, Holiday and Holy Day to assist on the altar or read the lessons. Currently, Calvary has 19 regular and 3 seasonal lectors. There are 13 regular chalice bearers, 1 is seasonal.
The 10:15am service has the abundance of both lectors and chalice bearers. If anyone who regularly attends the 8am service feels the Spirit moving you to do one or the other or both, please let Pastor Emily or me know. It would be great to have you on the schedule. Gwen O’Loughlin

Don Bradley Larry Hanahan Don Lamont Irene Stone
Jan Bruesch Sandi Haynes Patricia Lamont Lauren Szady
Pat Cekal Shirley Horn Andrew Nolan Karen Worthington

Here are quotes from some of the members as to what choir means to them.
“Belonging to the choir is like being in a family. It’s fun and I enjoy singing.”
“Choir is my ‘therapy’ for the week.”
“To be able to sing God’s Word carries me through the week. I miss it in the summer.”
“The people in the choir make me feel at home and like I belong here. The music we sing sticks with you through the week and keeps the service alive.”
“Being in the choir is a great means of enhancing my faith. It has been a great experience over the years.” “It is said that he who sings, prays twice.”
“What a joy to sing to the Lord!”
I thank the choir for their hard work and true dedication to the music program at Calvary. I also thank the Clergy and Vestry for their continued support. The thanks and kind words from the members of our Calvary family for the anthems we perform are appreciated so very much.
Anyone high school age or above is invited to be in the choir. We rehearse each Sunday morning (Sept. to May) from 9:05 to 10:10 in the Choir Loft. New members are always welcome to join us and enjoy the fun and fellowship each Sunday morning. Jeri Kellan, Music Director
BAGEL COMMITTEE
The Calvary Bagel Committee has had another stellar year. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow or heat
has stopped this loyal band of good folks from delivering
those mouthwatering treats to all of us at Calvary. In addition to
providing “food for thought” for Adult Formation and Coffee Hour the donations
are given to the Lawrence House in Chicago where it is shared with needy folks.
Our
thanks to the following loyal and dedicated Calvarians who have faithfully
carry out this ministry each and every Sunday: Linda & Nick Arnold, Donald
George Castle, Sandy Hitchin, Ross Kellan, John and Barb Morrice, Katie &
Greg Pardue, Ruth Ann and Brian Pfohl, Sue & Ron Seger, Marilyn Stein and
Pastor Emily. Bravo and a standing ovation to these folks for their terrific
work! Ross Kellan
WORSHIP/ACOLYTES
Well, this ends my third year on the Vestry. I
think this past year has been great because of all the people who are involved
in making our worship on Sunday happen. During the past year there have been
some changes. Pastor Emily changed our liturgy and also introduced some new
music. I, myself have enjoyed these changes. I went with several Vestry members
and Pastor Emily to a congregational development seminar that the Diocese put
on. This past Lent Don Bradley and I led the Stations of the Cross which was
very moving for both of us. Thank you Don. I would also like to give a special
thanks to Donald Castle who painted the nursery and to Jennifer Panegasser who
has been updating the furniture in the nursery. Last, I would like to thank the
altar guild, servers, acolytes, readers, ushers, choir, and those in the
nursery. We always need volunteers in these ministries so please think of
where your talents are. Thank you. Your servant in
Christ, Dew Nolan
USHERS
In addition to the regularly scheduled services, the Ushers also serve at many special services throughout the year. I would like to thank each and everyone of the ushers for a JOB WELL DONE. (Tim Cortesi, Herbert Alberts, Sari Chick, Linda Arnold, Ross Kellan, Ron Seger, Sandy Hitchin, Nancy Magurno, Lynn Honiotes, Youth on Youth Sunday, and especially to the three new ushers, John Morrice, Grant Iannelli, and Jim Adamson). As always, if the urge strikes and you would like to be an usher PLEASE contact Jack Holley. Jack Holley, Head Usher
CROSS+ROADS NEWSLETTER ANNUAL REPORT 2009
For the calendar year 2009, 11 issues of Cross+Roads were produced. The summer issue is comprised of the two months of July & August. Many members of the congregation receive their copies of the newsletter via e-mail. Hard copies are mailed out to parishioners who are unable to attend Sunday services. Those who attend services but do not have e-mail pick up their copies in the Narthex each month.Calvary is covering the cost of printing and mailing. Postage averages approximately $25.00 OR LESS per month. Our thanks to ALL of our contributors throughout the year! Without you we could not have a newsletter! Dottie Cain, Linda McEwen
BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS REPORT FOR 2009
For the ten months ending in October, Buildings and Grounds spent $8047.49 of its $16,331.03 budget. We plan to end this year under budget. Due to a significant deficit in Calvary's 2009 budget we will not do some maintenance and repairs this year. Expenses such as sealing and striping the parking lot, exterior painting, and carpet cleaning will be postponed until next year. Some savings were achieved by having contractors compete for our business, other savings were from contractor discounts because they like us.
A big heads up: The roof on Fellowship hall may need to be replaced in the near future.
Highlights this year: We have a new floor and entry door to Fellowship Hall, the floor by the sacristy has been replaced. We have a new and really cool handrail by the old Narthex exit.
A big thank you the Village of Lombard for removing the three dead trees in front of the church. This act of kindness saved us many, many dollars.
A big thank you to Jack Holley and those who gave of their time to shovel snow, pull weeds and plant, change light bulbs, cut grass, wash windows, etc, etc, etc. I invite everyone to join us even though it's not tax deductible.
...in memory of Solo... Frank Samela
ALTAR GUILD
Calvary’s Altar Guild is a group of women dedicated to bringing care and beauty to our sanctuary. We are divided into two groups. Sacristans clean the sanctuary and prepare the altar for services. The Linen committee is responsible for washing linens used during our services. Sacristans work in groups of three. The Linen committee works individually. At this time the schedule is once every five weeks.
Our members are: Hester Bury, Ada Carrasco, Judy Cherry, Sari Chick, Joyce Crowe, Regina Crowe, Linda DeVaun, Carol Halla, Sandy Hitchin, Dotty Humbert, Gloria Lazanas, Jean Morris, Ethel Samela, Barb Simmons, Gloria Sparrow, Marilyn Stein. Mercy Vance has moved to Naperville. We thank her for her many years of dedicated service.
Through the efforts of Judy Cherry, Barb Simmons, Pastor Emily Mellott and Gloria Sparrow we have an Altar Guild manual covering our responsibilities and information on all special services. Barb Simmons is our new “leader.” We all support her in her new position and welcome anyone (men are also invited) interested in joining us in this rewarding ministry. Call Pastor Emily or Barb Simmons at 630-627-2444. Gloria Sparrow
What does it mean to be a Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEM)? The LEM is a member of Calvary who takes the sacrament of communion and the sacrament of his/her personhood to members of Calvary Church whom, for whatever reason, cannot attend Sunday worship. Every Sunday, LEMs are involved in this ministry. Those who serve or have served as a LEM know what a vital and important ministry this is. Our shut-ins tell us over and over how much they appreciate being remembered by their church family and to be able to receive communion. LEMs worship with the homebound by reading the Gospel for that Sunday, sharing the Lord’s prayer, and administering the sacrament of Holy Communion.
We currently have 13 LEMs
who take communion to our shut-ins after Sunday worship. Welcome to new member, Ron Seger!! We are in need of more Lay Eucharistic
Ministers. If you have an interest in
learning more about this ministry, please contact Deacon Tom or Jean Morris.
ANNUAL REPORT –
SUNDAY SCHOOL 2009
Sunday School January 2009- May 2009 went as planned in the classrooms. Communion class took place in February and March during the Lenten season. Hester Bury, with the help of Lauren Szady and Deacon Tom, taught the communion class for 2nd grade students only and held it on a weeknight. The communicants were presented on April 5th, Palm Sunday. The Sunday School children participated in an outreach project, headed by Joyce and Regina Crowe, to help raise money to buy mosquito nets for countries plagued by malaria. The children were very enthusiastic about the cause and were successful in raising funds to help. The school year ended on June 7th with our annual Ice Cream Social. June, July and August was spent getting new teachers and planning for the upcoming school year. Jean Morris has joined the teaching team to assist in the 3rd, 4th, 5th grade class along side Hester Bury and Jennifer Hentrich. Due to the large class size 3 teachers were needed. Vacation Bible School was once again planned and directed by Kim Lombardi. It was held during the week of June 22nd -26th. The theme was Crocodile Dock. There were 25 adult and teen volunteers including many behind the scenes help and donations, both financial and material. 48 children were registered for the week. Both parish children and non-members attended. It was another very successful year of VBS. The J2A group went on their Urban Adventure to St. Louis for 4 days with their leaders and volunteer chaperones. They shared with the parish their experiences upon their return. The Sunday school year began on September 13th with an official registration. Parents were asked to fill out registration forms at the registration table and children and parents were welcome to visit the classrooms and meet the teachers. Sign up for the Christmas pageant and parent volunteers were also available at the registration table this year, as well as information sheets on the curriculums. Classes began on September 24th. The dismissal time for the Sunday School children, after the post communion prayer, is working successfully for all. Class time runs 45 minutes regardless of dismissal time. The teachers need time to instruct their planned lessons. Therefore, class may get out anytime between noon and 12:15PM. The former Breakfast Club moved up into the Rite 13 curriculum under the leadership of Tom Ceplecha and Karen Newlin. The Journey to Adulthood group continues to plan for their pilgrimage and determine fundraisers to aid in costs for the trip. A travel and planning committee was formed to help organize the trips for the students. Members of that committee are: John Horn, Mary Hannahan, Lynn Honiotes and Jim Adamson. Also in attendance at the meetings are Jennifer Ceplecha, Karen Dakis, Emily Mellott, Lisa Pardue and Donald George Castle. The Christmas pageant was held the Sunday before Christmas (Dec. 20th) and was directed by Lauren Szady with the help of Linda Szady and stage assisted by: Emily Adamson and Grant Adamson. Rehearsals began on November 11th and continued on Wednesday evenings leading up to the pageant on December. 20th. Dress rehearsal took place Saturday morning, December 19th. Jennifer Ceplecha

OUTREACH REPORT 2009
As previously stated Calvary continues its mission to ‘’Go into the world and serve” in a number of ways:
PADS
A team of volunteers helped regularly at PADS the 4th Tuesday of every month at First Church of Lombard. John Jaska has been responsible for the planning and cooking. Barb Morrice helped with the shopping and cooking . Gloria Sparrow and Dottie Humbert have worked night and early morning shifts. The Lombard Bible Church has been sending at least 10 volunteers monthly and is helping out financially. We have many regular volunteers and some one-timers, but new volunteers are always welcome. Hester Bury and I did the walk/run in September which produced over $300 in donations to fight world hunger.
THE HUMANITARIAN SERVICE PROJECT
John Jaska has worked with food pick-ups for the poor and with providing Christmas gifts as needed.
MOTHERS DAY INFANT COLLECTION
For Mother’s Day we again collected infant items that were donated to Teen Parent Connection in Glen Ellyn.
TASTE OF LOMBARD
We raised over $600 for Calvary and Outreach projects, and our youth program by serving beer and soda at the Taste of Lombard.
REFUGEES
During July and August we assembled one Welcome Pack for the newly arrived Yohanis family, our refugees from Ethiopia. Mom, Dad and a cute little two year old girl with a new addition on the way. The father just got a job and is going to be taking classes to get his CNA license. We still keep busy with the Patrici family from Burundi and our Burmese family. Sandy Hitchin has really devoted a lot of time and energy running between these families as has Fran Cole, Marilyn Stein and Katie Pardue. They help with taking them to appointments, laundry and cooking issues, finances and learning English. Fran continues to tutor at the Glen Ellyn Community Resource Center where many of the children attend after-school programs.
CROP WALK
The J2a and Rite 13 group led by Lisa Pardue, Karen Newlin and Tom Ceplecha took the lead in participating in this year’s Crop Walk to raise over $500 for Church World Service Programs throughout the World. 25% of the money stays in the local area to help food pantries.
CATHEDRAL SHELTER
Our Christmas tradition has been to provide gifts for several Chicago families in need supported by the Cathedral Shelter. This year we provided gifts for six families. The collecting of gifts and packing was coordinated by John and Nikki Jaska.
FORMATION
We had a wonderful presentation by SCARCE, a recycling charity in February.
PANTRY
Donations of money and goods from our pantry are now taken over to the First Methodist Church at the end of every month by Maggie Nolan. Volunteers are needed during the day to help with distribution.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED TIME, TALENT OR TREASURE TO HELP THOSE LESS FORTUNATE!
Respectfully submitted, Patty LeBlanc
FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE
The fellowship committee has been busy this year with the church picnic, coffee hour every week and the caroling party. All of these events are well attended and enjoyed by everyone in the congregation. These events would not be nearly as successful without the help of the following people and we would like to thank them all!!
We would like to thank Jennifer Ceplecha, Kim Lombardi and the Rite 13 and J2A classes for their assistance with the games at the picnic. Also, we appreciate the help from the ECM with all the cooking. John Horn as always provided great entertainment with his DJ talents. Jim Cekal once again coordinated the ever popular Yolf tournament. Thank you to the Dakis’ for running the first annual bags tournament.
Coffee hour would not run as smoothly without Sally McClure setting up every week and John Morrice putting together the clean up schedule. We appreciate the help of everyone who signs up every month to clean up. Thank you to all those who pick up the bagels on a weekly basis as well.
The Caroling Party was attended by 25 people and we visited 5 parishioners home. We enjoyed singing and visiting with them. Thanks to Ken and Sara Pardue for preparing the refreshments after we finished caroling.
Thank you to Gloria Sparrow for her faithful service in planning the funeral luncheons.
Thanks again to everyone who served on this committee to make our time together so enjoyable.
Faithfully yours, Lisa Pardue, Gloria Sparrow
DISCRETIONARY FUND REPORT 2009
The Discretionary Fund is used by the clergy to provide small-scale immediate assistance to people in the wider community (Lombard and neighboring towns) who come to us in need. Deacon Tom and I use this fund for such needs as train fare, gas money, groceries, medication, and occasionally temporary shelter.
These funds come primarily from the open plate offerings on the first Sunday of each month. Individuals and organizations with whom Calvary has a relationship have made occasional contributions, as well as the Calvary Episcopal Church Women. And I designate most funeral and wedding honorariums to this fund.
In 2009, $2,364 was received for the discretionary account from various sources, and $2,596 was disbursed to assist with transportation, food, housing, and other short term needs for individuals in the surrounding community. the Rev. Emily A. Mellott
LOVE FUND REPORT 2009
We have been blessed, over the last ten years, to be able to help parishioners in financial need through the Love Fund. Many of you already know that this was set up under Father Castle’s direction, and funded mostly by the generosity of one individual. Since then, gifts designated for this purpose have been received from many in the parish. The funds’ primary uses are for members of the congregation, and members of their households, for emergency and extra-ordinary needs, and are grants, not loans. During the course of 2009, we made grants totaling $4351.56 to 6 households. These grants provided for repairs, medical and housing-related costs for families in temporary but critical need.
