Reaching beyond Calvary's walls with our faith

At Calvary, our learning and worship focus on connecting our faith with our weekday lives, the world beyond our walls.  Our work and witness and prayer as Christians takes place at work and in the grocery store, at school and at play, at home with family and friends, and out and about on vacation or in our community.

Ashes to go

On Ash Wednesday, we help our Lombard neighbors practice their faith in daily life when we offer Ashes to Go, meeting commuters at the Metra station with ashes and prayer to mark the beginning of Lent.

Pet Memorial and Blessing

Each fall, we reach out to people who are grieving the loss of a pet, or celebrating the gifts pets bring to our lives.  We invite leaders and members of neighboring churches to make our Pet Memorial and Blessing a true community celebration.

Indoor Winter Farmers’ Market

Since 2014, we have been hosting a Winter Farmers' Market each year with Faith in Place and the Prairie Food Co-op, expanding our Sunday morning table fellowship to include a joyful abundance of local fresh foods, and welcoming the whole community to shop.

Annual Lenten Project

Every year in Lent, Calvary raises funds for a significant project to make an impact in the lives of folks around the world or close to home. In years past, we have raised funds for the Diocese of Renk in South Sudan, for ChildServ in DuPage County, and for Magdalen House in Chicago.

For 2018 Calvary ministries we will be supporting will include PADS for the homeless, our prayer blanket ministry, that helps those who are ill or suffering, our new Kids Hope ministry for local children in need of mentoring, our Garden for the local food pantry.  It costs ONLY $5000.00 to support our outreach ministries If we go beyond our $5000 the rest will go to now Magdalene House, which is a home that helps women leave the sex trafficking industry and begin a new life!

UPDATE: As of April 15th we have surpassed our goal to the total of $5,500!!!!!!! Thank you to all who gave. Our ministries to the homeless and hungry, those in need of healing, and kids will all be fully funded this year. Again thank you for providing the means and ways that Calvary can support those in need in our community.

Backpack Drive

Calvary runs an annual Backpack and School Supply drive to benefit children at nearby Madison School in Lombard. Many Lombard families struggle to provide needed supplies, and Calvarians have stepped up to provide backpacks, pens, notebooks, crayons, glue and more to help ensure that our neighborhood’s children are equipped for learning at the beginning of the school year.

Hunger ministries

Calvarians love to eat, and we love to feed others!

We regularly gather groups to volunteer at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Each fall we have an annual participation in the CROP Walk each fall, raising funds and awareness for the challenge of ending hunger. 2017's walk was held on October 15th. It had approximately 120 walkers – 14 from Calvary! Though the final count isn't in yet, the walk raised at least $16,000. Calvary raised about $2,500!

A group of Calvarians volunteers once a month to prepare dinner, breakfast, and overnight hosting for the DuPagePADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) site at our neighboring UCC church.

In 2016, we started a garden to help feed our hungry neighbors. The youth started and grew seeds that turned into 81 pounds of food being donated to the Lombard/Villa Park Food Pantry.

Other Calvarians have an ongoing ministry welcoming and supporting refugee families re-located to the Lombard area, including preparing apartments for new arrivals and helping families orient to life in the United States.
